Mary Alice Crandall: "A Tribute to a Legend"
Few can say they have been faithful to a group for nearly seven decades. What was it about the Messiah Chorus of Lake County that held such a grip on Mary Alice Crandall? "Singing it just gets me into the holiday spirit", Crandall told a News-Herald reporter in 2005. "There ís such a wonderful camaraderie among us, even though we are all different faiths. I wouldn't want to miss it."
Mary Alice, an alto, only missed singing two presentations of Handel's magnificent Messiah, having joined the group at its beginning in 1948. She sang with the group for 69 performances, even singing well into her 90s. She died in January 2020 at 100 years!
"She is an inspiration to all of us", said alto Carroll Dunn in a 2017 article in the Gazette Newspapers. From the spiritual end, Mary Alice has been an inspiration to us all, because no matter what, the Messiah is a prayer. It is Mary Alice's Christmas prayer.
Now Mary Alice is inspiring a new generation of singers from her place in heaven.
Do you want to be part of a group of singers that stays together for decades because they love the music, the camaraderie, and the spirituality? Join the chorus for the 2025 75th Anniversary presentation of Messiah on December 7 at 4 p.m. at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 9925 Johnnycake Ridge Road, Concord Township. Register to sing here.
